Advantages and Disadvantages of Writing For Yourself Instead of For Clients

Would you like to write articles as a method of earning a living for yourself? If this is the case, chances are you’ll probably want to know what options are available for you. One of the many important decisions you will have to make includes deciding who you wish to write for. Do you want to write for yourself or do you want to write for clients? To ensure that you make the best decision, it will be best for you to examine the advantages and disadvantages of writing for yourself instead of for clients.

Advantage #1 : Freedom to choose what topics to write about

The most important advantage to writing articles for yourself is you’re free to choose what topics you want to write about. This means that you can write about anything that you’re familiar with and that you have knowledge and expertise about. If you write for a client, you’re limited to the topics given by the client. And the client will expect you to write in a certain way. Clients will lay down conditions before your articles are acceptable.

Advantage #2 : Freedom to do what you want with your articles

Another advantage to writing articles for yourself is the fact that you can do what you want with your own articles. If you were to write for others, you may have to surrender all rights to your work and you cannot ever use the articles that you’ve written for them in any way. You no longer own the articles.

Advantage #3 : Freedom to choose the method to earn from your articles

The next advantage to writing articles for yourself is that you can use the articles that you’ve written any way you want. You can sell them, you can publish them on your website, you can use them in a newsletter, you can send them as emails to your subscribers and other methods that you can think of to earn from your articles. There are many ways you can use the articles you’ve written for yourself to make money. You’re only limited by your own creativity.

Let's now delve into the disadvantages of writing for yourself instead of for clients. It seems that there are not many disadvantages but these are only my own personal opinions. You might think of other disadvantages depending on your personal situation.

Disadvantage #1 : Uncertain income

The only clear disadvantage to writing articles for yourself is that you may not see the money so soon. It may take some time for the articles that you’ve written on your website to earn any money. But if you were to write for clients, you would probably see the money in your bank as soon as you deliver the articles.

Whether you want to write articles for yourself or for clients will depend on what you prefer. Do you like the freedom of writing anything you want or do you want your articles to earn money immediately? Perhaps you can find a balance between writing for yourself and writing for a few regular clients.
